Rosy Footman - Miltochrista miniata

Wingspan 23 to 27 mm. A very attractive moth, with orange or pinkish forewings, crossed by a curious black wavy line.

It occurs in woodland habitat.

Flying in July and August, the adults are attracted to light.

The caterpillars feed on lichens growing on trees, including Dog Lichen.

Found in the southern half of Britain, but is commonest in the southern seaboard counties. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
