About 8mm long it is a reddish brown beetle with a black head but darker, brown forms also occur. 

Similar to L. ferrugineus, except this species has a dark head and also a dark end to the elytra.

Found primarily in damp places in woodland, damp grassland and gardens. Look under stones, loose bark, in grass tussocks etc.

Late spring and summer

It is widespread and common in Britain

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
