Description

Wingspan 27 to 34 mm. As the Common Name suggests, the species has a mottled green appearance which provides camouflage when at rest on lichen, however the patterning can be quite variable.

Habitat

Mainly recorded on the coasts of southern England and south Wales, occasionally reaching inland, usually on calcareous soils. 

When to see it

On the wing during July and August.

Life History

The caterpillars feed on lichens on rocks and walls.

A local species, occurring mainly on the coasts of southern England and south Wales, occasionally reaching inland, usually on calcareous soils. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

VC55 Status

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland.
