Ablabesmyia
Ablabesmyia are a genus of non-biting midges. They are very difficult to identify to species level, but we have included it as a genus only entry as they are quite distinctive.
Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required. If the photo doesn't show the key ID features, then in the comments box describe the size and identifying characters you have observed.
Wet and marshy places, shaded pools and wet ditches.
Spring and summer.
Ablabesmyia species seem to be quite widespread in Britain, though not well recorded.
Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
