Shepshed lies in the north-west of Leicestershire within the borough of Charnwood. The town originally grew based on the wool industry and was once known as Sheepshed. It has a long history and was listed in the Domesday Book in 1086, though has even older Anglo-Saxon origins. Today the town is mainly surrounded by agricultural fields, with Blackbrook Reservoir in the south-west and the M1 to the east. There is a good network on public footpaths providing access into the nearby countryside.
Shepshed Biodiversity Group, affiliated to Shepshed Town Council, was formed to encourage local people to develop an interest in, and the recording of, wildlife in the Shepshed area. The Group is also keen to identify sites around Shepshed that can be made more wildlife friendly by planting trees, sowing wildflower meadows and building ponds. If you live in the area and would like to find out more or get involved, contact:

We need more wildlife observations from around Shepshed. So, if you've seen a species you recognise, from a Blue tit to a Bluebell, click on the header to find out what to do.
The Painted Lady butterfly is migratory and in some years millions arrive in the UK from the continent and North Africa. Though it does breed here in the summer, it is unable to survive the winter so each year we rely on a new influx of migrants. This one was photographed in Shepshed during 2021.
