Copper Underwing agg. - Amphipyra pyramidea agg.
Wingspan 40 to 52 mm. Copper Underwing (Amphipyra pyramidea) is very similar to Svensson's Copper Underwing (Amphipyra berbera) and it is very difficult to separate these two moths to species level. If detailed examination has not taken place they should be recorded as an aggregate.
Woodland, scrub, hedgerows, gardens and parks.
The adults fly from August to October and visit both sugar and light.
The larvae feed on a range of trees and shrubs, mainly oak (Quercus).
Fairly frequent as an aggregate over the Southern half of Britain.
Fairly frequent as an aggregate in Leicestershire and Rutland but exact status is difficult to determine due to the problems of identification to species level. Existing records would suggest that Copper Underwing (Amphipyra pyramidea) is the more common of the two in our area, but it is possible that examples of Svensson's Copper Underwing (Amphipyra berbera) are being overlooked.
