The site can be accessed by foot from Mount Grace Road, off Maxwell Drive. It is also easily reached by bus. (Kinchbus no. 12 stops a short walk away on Maxwell Drive).

Created in the 1980s, the main role of the Washlands is to provide flood alleviation, but it is also a rich wildlife site and provides informal recreation for local residents.
The combination of open water, woodland, hedgerow and grassland offers a rich habitat for a range of wildlife. Common Frog, Toad and Smooth Newt all breed in the pond.
